Dental Oral Hygiene Procedure: X-rays and Scale & Clean

Welcome to our dental clinic! We are committed to providing you with excellent oral care to keep your teeth and gums healthy. This brochure aims to guide you through the dental oral hygiene procedure, specifically X-rays and Scale & Clean, to help you understand the process and its importance in maintaining your oral health.

Why are X-rays necessary?

X-rays, also known as dental radiographs, are essential diagnostic tools for your dentist. They provide valuable information about your oral health that is not visible to the naked eye. X-rays can help detect:

  1. Cavities between teeth.
  2. Gum diseases and bone loss.
  3. Dental infections.
  4. Dental abnormalities.
  5. Impacted teeth.
  6. Tumors or cysts.

By detecting these issues early, your dentist can recommend appropriate treatment, preventing further complications and preserving your oral health.

What to expect during an X-ray procedure?

  1. Preparation: You may be asked to wear a lead apron to protect the rest of your body from radiation. Your dentist or dental assistant will position a small, flat sensor inside your mouth, which captures the X-ray images.
  2. X-ray capture: You will be asked to bite down gently on the sensor while the X-ray machine is positioned outside your mouth. Multiple X-rays may be taken from different angles to provide a comprehensive view.
  3. Safety measures: Dental clinics follow strict safety guidelines to minimize radiation exposure. The amount of radiation used for dental X-rays is considered safe, and the procedure is relatively quick and painless.
  4. Results and discussion: Your dentist will review the X-ray images and discuss the findings with you. They will explain any concerns or abnormalities detected and suggest suitable treatment options, if necessary.

What is Scale & Clean?

Scale & Clean, also known as dental cleaning or prophylaxis, is a preventive dental procedure performed to remove plaque, tartar, and stains from your teeth. It involves two primary steps:

  1. Scaling: Using specialized dental tools, your dentist or dental hygienist will gently remove plaque and tartar buildup from your teeth, including those hard-to-reach areas. This process helps prevent gum diseases and tooth decay.
  2. Polishing: After scaling, your teeth will be polished to remove surface stains and create a smooth, clean surface. A special toothpaste-like material is applied and polished with a rotating brush or rubber cup, leaving your teeth looking brighter and feeling smoother.

Benefits of Scale & Clean:

  1. Maintains oral health: Regular Scale & Clean visits help prevent gum diseases, cavities, and tooth loss, promoting long-term oral health.
  2. Fresher breath: Removing plaque and tartar helps eliminate the bacteria responsible for bad breath, leaving you with fresher breath.
  3. Brighter smile: Polishing your teeth during the procedure removes surface stains, enhancing the natural brightness of your smile.
  4. Early problem detection: During the Scale & Clean procedure, your dentist can identify any potential oral health issues and recommend appropriate treatments before they worsen.

Maintaining your oral health at home:

While dental visits are crucial, maintaining good oral hygiene at home is equally important. Remember to:

  1. Brush your teeth at least twice a day using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste.
  2. Floss daily to remove plaque and food particles from between your teeth and along the gumline.
  3. Use an antibacterial mouthwash to help reduce plaque-causing bacteria.
  4. Limit sugary snacks and drinks, as they contribute to tooth decay.
  5. Schedule regular dental check-ups and cleanings.
